Reunion concert by Randal Corsen
Sometimes we forget that the Netherlands extends beyond Europe. Randal Corsen knows all about that. Born in Curaçao, the pianist and composer came to the Netherlands to study, work and teach, before returning to the island some years ago. In his music he likes to build bridges between Europe and the Caribbean. Renowned for his energy, the pianist is a master at combining Antillean music with jazz and classical. Having absorbed European-Dutch and Caribbean music traditions, he blended modern jazz with Antillean and Caribbean influences on his debut album Evolushón. That ground-breaking album with a unique sound earned him an Edison, immediately establishing his name. In the years that followed he refined his sound further in all dimensions.
In 2011 he formed the quartet Symbiosis, a band that included three major Dutch talents. Their album mixed the powerful rhythms of Curaçao with the dynamism and explosiveness of jazz. That progressive, potent and innovative sound resulted in another Edison nomination. Soon after, Corsen moved back to Curaçao, the island where his name quickly surfaces when music is discussed. Specially for RAUW, Corsen is bringing Symbiosis together again for a reunion concert. Where else but in the most Caribbean city in the Netherlands could this show take place?
This concert is made possible by the Fenix Music Factory and piano builder Henk Hupkes.
