Swart grew up in Vlissingen and studied composition at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Along the way, she visited Hong Kong and New York, and her compositions for SWART. give a sense of immersion in those places. Swart’s solidly modern alto sound carries her band – the vibraphone of Nano Peláez makes a key contribution – through arrangements that reflect a search for freedom and order, for space to breathe as well as stability. Quite like the way you can totally lose your way in the city, but the sleek skyline patterns always give you something to hold onto.
